Representative of Cork Social Housing Forum attends meeting at the United Nations in New York.
Shirley O’Sullivan on behalf of Cork Social Housing Forum made a presentation on the work of the Housing Forum at a Civil Society Forum held Tuesday 2nd February in the United Nations New York
Shirley outlined the purpose and work of the Forum, services provided by member organizations, the barriers to social inclusion and the challenges facing member organizations.
Cork Social Housing Forum responded last year to an online survey on good practices to promote social integration. The survey was organized by the NGO Committee for Social Development with the collaboration of the United Nations Non Government Liaison Service based in New York.
There were 190 responses from 62 countries. Cork Social Housing Forum was invited to make a presentation at a Civil Society Forum organized every year by the NGO Committee for Social Development. Among other roles, this Committee is dedicated to raising awareness and holding discussions on social development issues taken up by the United Nations System and in particular by the UN Commission for Social Development.
The Commission for Social Development is a functional commission of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. It consists of 46 member countries.
Since the convening of the World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen in 1995, the Commission has been the key UN body in charge of the follow-up and implementation of the Copenhagen Declaration and Programme of Action. It meets once a year in New York.
Each year since 1995, the Commission has taken up key social development themes as part of its follow-up to the outcome of the Copenhagen Summit.
This year the Commission meets for the purpose of agreeing policy to promote social integration at local, national and international level.
